Not too long ago, I helped teach a callers’ school where one of the coaches was working with one of the men on the stage.
After his tip was over, the coach asked what it was he was attempting to do. The answer, “I was selling it.” The coach thought for a moment, looked at the stage, and said, “Well, I’m not buying it and you can sell whatever *it* is somewhere else.”
When you’re calling a dance, you’re serving the dancers, not yourself. It is tempting to think it’s about you but it isn’t. Have style. Be showy. Perform. Leave your ego out of it.
